2011 Koenigsegg Agera R Supercar

This year at the Geneva Motor show Koenigsegg is presenting the brand new Agera R – Quicker than lightning!

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R

The Agera R on the Koenigsegg show stand – production car # 83 – is inspired by the legendary Speed Racer theme, as specified by the owner of the car. Speed Racers main colour is white – so is snow. Equipped with special Michelin tires and a custom made Thule Roof Box – Speed Racer is ready to attack the ski resorts! The Agera pre-production car has been driven by several influential motoring journals, resulting in raving reviews and awards, such as for example becoming the “Top Gear Hypercar of the Year”

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R

However, year after year Koenigsegg has proved them wrong. Not only are the engines developed in-house, they also have class leading characteristics in many important areas. To mention a few: Lightest and most compact hypercar engine in the world, weighing only 197 kg complete with flywheel, clutch, dry sump system, Inconel exhaust manifold with turbo. The low engine weight is quite astonishing, as the Agera engine also has class leading power and torque characteristics. To give an example, the Koenigsegg 5 litre V8 bi-turbo engine develops more than 900 hp on 95 octane regular fuel, and more than 1100 hp on E85 bio fuel. The Agera produces over 1000 Nm of torque from 2500 rpm and in the Agera R format the engine has a peak torque of 1200 Nm over a 3300 rpm
rev range, showing great flexibility.

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R

Koenigsegg has its own engine lab, with simulation programs, rapid prototyping machines, engine and chassis dynamometers, and a 1.7 km test track adjacent the factory enabling Koenigsegg to take the cars to 0-320-0 km/h at any time. Furthermore, a 25 minute drive away from the Koenigsegg Factory there is Knutstorp Racetrack, which is described by many as a miniature Nordschleife. Here Koenigsegg can put the engine and car through serious testing and make sure they work in perfect harmony. This gives Koenigsegg unique possibilities to develop technologies normally exclusive to much larger companies.

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R

No other production engine in the world, regardless of car type, has the same amount of power potential compared to its EU cycle average CO2 emission(310g of CO2) or cycle fuel consumption( 14,7 litre per 100 km / 16MPG). However, what makes Koenigsegg most proud is how drivable, smooth, responsive, torquey and reliable the engines are – especially given their extreme performance.

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R

The Agera engine complies with the most stringent environmental regulations in the world, EU5 and LEV2, and delivers a significant power increase compared to previous Koenigsegg engines.
Fuel consumption, and thus CO2 emissions, has been lowered. This is an astonishing feat for a 900+ hp hypercar. Turbo response is of vital importance when it comes to driving pleasure and the possibility to control massive amounts of power. Therefore Koenigsegg has joined forces with Borg Warner and adapted to the latest technology when it comes to turbine materials. The Agera R turbines are made from a material called Gamma-Ti which is an inter metallic compound comprised of aluminium and titanium. This new material drastically reduces the inertia of the turbine wheel and axle and therefore gives improved response. Furthermore Koenigsegg has coupled this latest generation turbo technology with patent pending and proprietary response/back pressure reduction system, invented by Christian von Koenigsegg to really give the Agera engine a competitive edge when combining maximum power while complying with the strictest emission regulations in the world.

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R

The newly developed 7 speed gearbox for the Agera features a world’s first dual clutch system for a single input shaft gearbox. In order to keep the gearbox light, compact strong and reliable, Koenigsegg together with Cima chose to develop a new gearbox type that enables the use of a combination of a dry and wet clutch system, in order to get class leading shift times. First there is the normal twin disc dry clutch that operates in a traditional fashion. Then there is a hydraulically operated wet clutch-brake inside the gearbox that is engaged during each up shift in order to slow down the input shaft, simultaneously as the gears are changed and prior to the normal synchronisation. This cuts the synchronisation time by two thirds, as the gear is presynchronized. The result is a very sporty, smooth and extremely fast shift. Compared to a traditional DCT system, this gearbox is lighter, smaller, has less moving parts and gives a more distinct shift feel, with almost no interruption to the acceleration. Furthermore, the electro hydraulic shift mechanism actuates the shift forks directly with no intermediate mechanical parts. This brings down the inertia of the shift mechanism and any potential slack is minimized since the shortest possible path of engagement is achieved.

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R

The entire transmission weighs only 81 kg, which is by far the lightest 7 speed Hypercar transmission in the world. The transmission can also be set in full auto mode.

The small size and very low weight, considering the longitudinal 7 speed layout, made it possible to maintain the shortest in class rear overhang, and thereby excellent central mass position and neutral behaviour in extreme conditions.

The Aerodynamics of the Agera has been honed and perfected over many years in CFD and wind tunnel in order ensure best possible outcome. Even with the massive dynamic rear wing, the drag of the Agera is only Cd 0.33, in high speed mode and Cd 0.37 in track mode. Even though the Agera is a full 2 meters wide, it only has a frontal area of 1.87 m2. This results in a Cd*A value of only 0.62 and thus a theoretical top speed of around 440 km/h (Agera R), given the gear ratio and power available. All Agera models are limited to 375 km/h in standard mode, but can be unlocked by Koenigsegg for shorter periods of time, if all necessary conditions are met, such as road condition, tire wear, service level of car etc. The car is set in full speed mode by unlocking the top speed mode in the Infotainment system.

2011 Jaguar C-X75 Concept

The C-X75 concept is both a celebration of 75 years of iconic Jaguar design and a look into the future of automotive technology.

Designed as a range-extended electric two-seater supercar, it explores the outer limits of both performance and sustainability. With plug-in capability the car can achieve a zero tailpipe emissions range of 110km (68 miles) – three times round Paris’s Péripherique – when running under battery power alone, plus a potential top speed of 330km/h (205mph) and blistering acceleration.

The car demonstrates that it is possible to retain Jaguar’s core values of performance, design and luxury using technology that will make environmentally responsible performance and electric vehicles a practical proposition.

The C-X75’s 580kW propulsion system combines powerful 145kW (195bhp) electric motors at each wheel for outstanding performance. At the centre of the car sit state-of-the-art, mid-mounted micro gas-turbines. These can either generate 140kW (188bhp) to charge the batteries and extend the range of the car to a remarkable 900km (560 miles) – enough to drive from London to Berlin on a single tank – or when in Track mode provide supplementary power directly to the electric motors. The four electric motors provide torque-vectored, all-wheel drive traction and grip, essential in a car that produces 580kW (778bhp) and 1600Nm (1180lb ft) of torque.

UNIQUE MATERIALS – Bespoke interior materials combining Jaguar-commissioned leathers, metal micromesh panels, soft-feel textured neoprene and a mixture of polished and vapour-blasted aluminium surfaces

Finished in Jetstream Silver, the C-X75’s beautiful proportions, sculpted lines and powerful stance have been created, in the words of Julian Thomson, to "pull at the same emotional heartstrings as classic Jaguars such as the D-Type and XJ13 racers.”

Using an underbody Venturi and directional exhaust gas control kept the car as sleek, compact and low as possible while still generating immense amounts of grip and downforce. Indeed, the movement of air itself was one of the principal drivers behind many of the design cues that were incorporated into the bodywork. Principal designer Matt Beaven reveals how the airflow into the turbines helped to shape the surfaces of the car itself: “We wanted to emphasise how the air makes its way not just over the car but is also channelled into the rear airbox. When operating at 80,000rpm, each gas-turbine requires 35,000 litres of air a minute which means we needed a series of carefully honed intakes.”

PERFORMANCE – 0-100km/h (62mph) in 3.4 seconds, a top speed of 330km/h (205mph) and 80-145km/h (50-90mph) in just 2.3 seconds

EFFICIENCY – Explores the outer limits of Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (RE-EV) technology with CO2 emissions of just 28g/km and a range of 900km (560 miles)

ZERO EMISSIONS – Fully charging the C-X75 from a domestic power supply takes six hours and allows the car to run with zero tailpipe emissions in electric-only mode for 110km (68 miles)

PROPULSION SYSTEM – 2 x 70kW (94bhp) micro gas-turbines and the plug-in Lithium-ion batteries provide power to four independent electric motors each rated at 145kW (195bhp) and 400Nm (295lb ft) of torque. These in turn provide drive to all four wheels

CONSTRUCTION – Uses Jaguar’s advanced lightweight aluminium construction techniques. Additionally, up to 50 percent of the metal content is recycled

ACTIVE AERODYNAMICS – An underbody Venturi system incorporates a movable aerofoil and directional control of the exhaust gases to provide maximum downforce without using spoilers

DRIVING POSITION – An electrically adjustable instrument binnacle, steering wheel and pedal box ensures the car is perfectly tailored to the driver

HUMAN MACHINE INTERFACE – Data from the car’s complex systems are shown on three information screens and can be transferred and filtered between displays as needed

British engineering firm Bladon Jets achieved a recent breakthrough in producing the multi-stage axial flow compressors – the technology used on all large gas turbines – on a miniaturised scale and to very high tolerances. This increased the compression and efficiency of micro gas-turbines to the point at which they can be viewed as a realistic power source. Each of the micro gas-turbines weighs just 35kg and produces 70kW of power at a constant 80,000rpm.

Electric motors also produce maximum torque from almost zero rpm, making the traditional power curve a thing of the past. In fact, such is the C-X75’s power that Jaguar’s engineers had to artificially limit the torque available from rest in order to improve the driveability of the car. The performance available in the mid-range is truly startling. The C-X75 will accelerate from 80-145km/h (50-90mph) in just 2.3 seconds. The quarter-mile sprint takes 10.3 seconds at a terminal velocity of 251km/h (156mph) and acceleration peaks at 0.88G.
Such astounding performance requires equally impressive braking. Jaguar already has a system proven to be up to the task. The C-X75 is fitted with the brakes used on the supercharged XFR which in 2009 became the fastest Jaguar ever, achieving 363km/h (226mph) at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. In this application, regenerative braking technology on all four wheels helps recharge the batteries during driving. The 380mm internally ventilated front discs and 345mm rears are covered by polished alloy wheels of 21 and 22 inches wrapped in bespoke hand-cut Pirelli rubber measuring 265/30 ZR21 and 365/25 ZR22 front and rear respectively

2012 Audi e-Tron Concept Car

2012 Audi E-Tron

Audi has always been known for stylish automobiles, but with their two e-Tron concept cars, they're looking to add high-performance green cars to their reputation -- even if the green cars in question are actually orange and silver.
Audi has debuted two concept cars under the e-Tron name. The repetition is intentional: Audi is planning for the e-Tron moniker to apply to all their EVs, similar to how all their all-wheel-drive vehicles have a Quattro designation.

The first e-Tron concept (the orange one) is based on the Audi R8 and debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and made it stateside for the 2009 L.A. Auto Show. The second e-Tron concept is smaller and lighter than the first and debuted at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. It's slightly larger than the current Audi TT but Audi says its architecture is more in line with the R8's. The larger 2009 concept will likely make it to production first, as the R4 e-Tron.

Details
The 2009 e-Tron concept is the one most likely to be in limited production by 2012. Expected to hit the road as the R4 e-Tron, the concept features independent electric motors at each of its four wheels. The combined output of the motors is 313 horsepower and an incredible 3,319 pound-feet of torque. Audi puts 0 to 62 time at 4.8 seconds. And says that the e-Tron should be able to rocket from 37 to 75 in just 4.1 seconds. At a 230 volt outlet, the e-Tron gets a full charge in about seven hours. However, if you have a 400 volt outlet, charging time is just 2.5 hours. On a full charge, it has a range of 154 miles.
The Audi e-Tron can accelerate from 0 – 62.14 mph in 5.9 seconds if or when it is necessary and it can also go from 37.28 – 74.56 mph in just 5.1 seconds. This car is also able to conveniently distribute the high-torque power of its 4 electric motors to the wheels as needed – this the e-tron the performance of a totally genuine sports car.
The 2010 e-Tron concept features two electric motors that create a combined 204 horsepower and 1,954 pound feet of torque. Zero to 62 time is 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. The 2010 e-Tron concept has a range of 125 miles on a single charge. A full charge takes 11 hours from a 230 volt outlet.
